Cover FX Enhancer Drops

I really love the trend to have bold highlight in makeup, and I hope it never ends! Now that my skin is really clearing up from its acne, I’ve been enjoying adding various amounts of shimmer to my makeup looks. I recently received a sample of the Cover FX Enhancer Drops, and I couldn’t wait to see how it would work as a highlighter. This product is available at Sephora and similar retailers for $42.

First, I’ll admit that I was a little intimidated. Judging by the container, I was afraid that this highlighter would be a bit too warm for my skin because my skin is very cool-toned. While I’ll admit that it’s not the perfect shade for me, I was very pleasantly surprised at how versatile the product was. A teeny teeny teeny tiny drop was all that I needed for a sun-kissed little shimmery highlight. At this rate, my little sample bottle might last a whole year or more. If you’re giving this one a try, I highly recommend using the smallest amount possible and building it up because it’s easy to overdo this one and look a bit theatrical.

Not all highlighters have the same finish or final look, and this one is rather metallic-looking, which is something that was new for me. I really liked it though. The result is that this product offers a very bold look as opposed to a subtle highlight. I think this is a perfect choice for women of color who might struggle to find a highlight that really pops. I think this one would work really well for them.

Clinique Almost Lipstick

I love bold lipsticks, but I know that not everyone does. I’m sure there are lots of people out there who are maybe afraid of too much color on the lips. I’ve had some friends ask me for a good starter lipstick that has a sheer but noticeable amount of color, and I typically recommend that these friends try Clinique’s Almost Lipstick. This lipstick retails at Sephora and similar retailers for $17.50.

Once upon a time, Clinique sold tons of shades in their Almost Lipstick line, but a few years ago they discontinued all but two universally-flattering shades: Pink Honey and Black Honey (which is more of a berry tone). It is pretty impressive how true the “universally-flattering” claim is. Every person I’ve recommended it to has found that it suited their skin tone. I’m sure there are exceptions out there, but they seem to be few and far between.

One reason that I think this is a good starter lipstick (besides it taking the guesswork out of what shade will flatter you) is the buildable color. You can swipe once for a sheer wash of color, or you can add more layers for more color. With this lipstick, you’re in total control. It also is very nourishing and will not dry out your lips (although, as a result, it’s also not very long-lasting).

Overall, I really love this lipstick. I use it on minimal makeup days, and I’m always happy with the result. If you’re looking for a lipstick but you’re a bit scared of trying one, I would highly recommend this lipstick.

Touch in Sol Eyeshadow and Glitter

It’s no secret that I’m a huge glitter expert, but even I have my limits. Enter the Touch in Sol Metallist Liquid Foil & Glitter Eye Shadow Duo, which retails at Sephora for $25.

I think it’s pretty evident even from the picture that this glitter is really chunky. What I mean by “chunky” is that the individual particles of glitter are quite large. Some products have smaller particles that result in a different type of finish. Typically, the larger the particle, the more dramatic the look. This is one end of the spectrum, but on the other end would be the products where the particles are so small the finish just looks shimmery and it’s almost impossible to discern between the particles.

Also, as a rule of thumb, the larger the glitter particles, the more fallout you’ll probably get. Fallout is when the glitter migrates to other parts of your face (in the case of eyeshadow, this usually means that you’ll start to see glitter on your cheeks by the end of the day). This was definitely the case with this product, and I was disappointed in the amount of fallout. It was even more evident due to the size of the particles.

As for the metallic part of the shadow, I thought it worked pretty well. Like most liquids, it will crease if you don’t use an eyeshadow primer before application, but I did think it was pretty. I will say that it is quite bold though, so this is not the product for you if you’re just looking for a sheer wash of metallic color.

Now, even though I didn’t like this, it’s worth noting that a lot of people have been giving this rave reviews. I might just be a bit biased because I received a gold shade, which does not compliment my skin tone, and I’m not super thrilled by chunky glitter (I much prefer a more finely milled product).

Have you tried this product? What are your thoughts? Please, let me know in the comments section.

Bobbi Brown Luxe Lipstick

I officially have a new favorite lipstick! That’s right – out of all the many lipsticks I’ve tried and reviewed and adored, I actually have a FAVORITE! Recently, I received a tube of the Bobbi Brown Luxe Lipstick in a lipstick set I bought from Sephora. When I looked at the retail price, I was kind of unnerved because it does retail for $37, which is pretty high for a lipstick. However, I was completely blown away by this lipstick!

I received a shade that I never would have picked for myself (seen above). The shade is “Brocade” and it’s a bright purple plum shade with a lot of depth to it, and I must say that it actually compliments my very pale cool-toned skin very well. It is extremely opaque and really only needs one layer of product to cover the lips completely and evenly. That was the first thing that impressed me because many lip products require more than one layer or they kind of need evening out after the first layer. With this one, I just had to do one swipe and I was good to go. Adding to its ease of application, there was no mess and it was easy to wipe away any mistakes I made without smearing everything.

As if that wasn’t already amazing enough, I was absolutely THRILLED by the lasting-power of this product. It lasts forever! Even when it begins to fade, it fades evenly throughout the lips. Most lipsticks fade most in the the center of the lips where the lips open into the mouth, and this creates a really uneven look throughout the day, but that didn’t happen at all with this product. The color faded evenly and still looked amazing even when it had faded. It went from looking like a bold lipstick to a lovely, even berry stain, which was just as pretty.

Uncomfortable anecdotal evidence: I was wearing this lipstick on a really bad emotional day (I found out my identity had been stolen – but don’t worry, I’m totally okay and it has all been resolved since then). My anxiety got so bad that I had two panic attacks (with lots of crying) and I vomited. When I was finally home and getting ready to take a shower, I looked in the mirror and saw my face – puffy from all the crying, smeared mascara everywhere, streaks of foundation that tears had almost washed away …. and perfect lips. That’s right, even at my absolute worst, this lipstick did not smear or completely fade and still looked gorgeous.

Most long-wear lipsticks tend to dry out your lips. This is just the nature of the beast because the properties that make them long-lasting are naturally drying, but this was very minimal with this product. I won’t saw that my lips weren’t a little dry at the end of the day. They were, but it wasn’t visually obvious at all. I believe this is because the lipstick is formulated with vitamins C and E to combat potential dryness.

Overall, this is absolutely the best lipstick I’ve ever tried. Despite the high price tag, I just ordered another one in “Retro Red” which is a gorgeous blue-red shade, and I’m so excited to try it. If it works just as well as this one, then I think I will have found the absolute best red lipstick, which has always been one of my life goals.

Fun Update and Maybelline Curvitude Liquid Eyeliner

I have exciting news: I just completed my makeup artist certification! I don’t plan on actually trying to make a career as a makeup artist, but I am very invested in this beauty blog and I wanted to learn as much as I could about makeup in order to provide the best information.

However, I don’t think all makeup artists agree on everything. For instance, I was taught that pencil eyeliners are superior to liquid eyeliners when doing a cat eye, but that just hasn’t been my experience. Sure, liquid eyeliners might be harder to use and achieve symmetry, but I think their finish and lasting power are unparalleled. A cat eye done in liquid eyeliner really stands out.

That being said, I have a new liquid eyeliner to review today: the Maybelline Curvitude Liquid Eyeliner. This product can be purchased from Target or similar retailers for about $7.

For the price, I definitely think that this is a nice eyeliner. The container is curved to adhere to the way that people hold pencils and eyeliners. I found that the way the container is made did actually help with the application. It was pretty easy to apply evenly as well, which is a huge plus and especially impressive for a drugstore eyeliner! The brush was also very thin at the tip which allowed for a lot of control and precision.

Now, the product wasn’t without its cons as well. I didn’t actually like the formula of the product. It never really dried completely, so it was just too easy to smudge. If you do end up using this product, you’ll need to keep that in mind and try very hard not to touch it once it is finished. Still, this was a nice drugstore option for a liquid eyeliner.

For those who are wondering, the liquid eyeliner I recommend and use the most is the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner which retails for $22 at Sephora.

What liquid eyeliners do you love? Have you found one that you swear by? Be sure to let me know in the comments section!

PTR Acne Clearing Wash

Over the holidays, I definitely over-indulged in sugary foods and I didn’t take great care of my skin. Now, I’m trying to fix all the acne I caused with my poor lifestyle and stress. This feels like an unending battle, but I’m glad that I finally found a gentle but effective cleanser to help me: the Peter Thomas Roth Acne Clearing Wash which can be purchased from Sephora for $38 for an 8.5 oz bottle.

First, I love that the bottle is so huge! Since you only need a little of this cleanser, the bottle is sure to last for a good while, which is nice since it’s not the cheapest cleanser. I also really love the citrusy scent. So many acne products smell horrible, but this one smells really light and fresh.

While the cleanser does contain salicylic acid to clear up acne, it does not contain any alcohol or dye. This is great because leaving out those ingredients means this cleanser is less likely to dry out your skin. Indeed, I’ve found that my skin is not at all dry after using this cleanser (even though it’s winter!)

I’ve definitely noticed a difference in my acne since using this cleanser, so I highly recommend it. It’s so easy to use and lathers well, plus it has a great scent and doesn’t dry out this skin. This one is definitely a keeper!

Moda Mythical Crease Brush

I received this adorable Moda Mythical Crease Brush in one of my latest Allure Beauty Boxes, and I was incredibly impressed with the brush quality and low price. This eyeshadow crease brush is part of a 5-piece set that retails for $20 at the Royal and Langnickel website as well as other online retailers.

Besides the beautiful aesthetic of the brush, I was also very impressed by how well the brush worked. It was very densely packed with bristles, but the bristles were very soft. I’ve been using the brush for blending for a while now, and it works incredibly well. Blending is very easy. I was worried that the size of the brush would be slightly too large for the crease, but this just wasn’t the case, and the blending capability also helps in case you go overboard with the crease color. I also haven’t experienced any brush shedding, and it’s been very easy to clean the brush. Overall, this is a great budget brand for makeup brushes, and I love the cute design!

Pixi Lip Tint and Gloss

Everyone loves a long-lasting lip color, but so many products have the unfortunate side effect of drying out lips and making them look all cracked and damaged. I find it’s always a balance between finding a nourishing product and one that gets a decent amount of wear between reapplication. Recently, I found a hybrid product that I just had to try: the Pixi by Petra GelTint & SilkGloss. This product can be purchased from Target for only $12.

I was very curious about how the gel texture would feel on the lips, and I was pleasantly surprised that it dries down without really drying out the lips too much. It is very sheer, so you have to kind of wait for it to dry and then layer it to get a color with much impact, so that is definitely a drawback. The light pink gloss is also very pretty and sparkly and isn’t sticky like some glosses. Overall, I liked this product, but it wasn’t without it’s flaws. It was very difficult to get a uniform opaque color, and I’ve found that the amount of time it takes to apply this product just doesn’t seem worth it. In the end, I did really like the gloss it came with though, so I’ve been using that alone for a while now.

Are there any long-wear lip options that you’ve found to work without drying out your lips? Be sure to let me know in the comments section!

Maybelline Master Contour

I am such a sucker for contouring. I love the idea of making my cheek bones look higher and my nose look thinner with this fun makeup trick of creating highlights and shadows. I’ve used some high end products as my staples, but I thought I’d give a drugstore palette a go to see if it could stack up against the Sephora favorites. I decided to go with the Maybelline Master Contour Palette which comes with a blush, highlighter, and bronzer. This set can be purchased from Target or other drugstores for $9. Since I’m very pale, I purchased the palette in Light-Medium shades.

Overall, I was impressed by this product. The brush that it comes with is pretty much worthless, so I used my other brushes. While the texture of the powders was a little chalky and not as finely milled as I prefer, it did blend really well. The blush was a nice shade that had just the right amount of pigment and was easy to use for a natural finish. The highlighter was the star here, and I loved the light shimmer it gave me. The bronzer wasn’t bad. It could have used a bit more pigment, but it was very buildable so it still worked. If you’re on a budget, I would definitely give this palette a chance!

Zoella Blissful Mistful Solid Fragrance

So, full disclosure: Zoella (AKA Zoe Sugg) is my favorite Youtuber. I love her channel and I think she’s so inspirational. When I saw her products in Target, I got super excited and I just had to try something, so I bought the Zoella Blissful Mistful Solid Fragrance. This product can be purchased at Target for $6.

This solid perfume has a very light, floral scent that I really liked when I smelled it in the tin. Unfortunately, it didn’t really react well to my body chemistry and ended up smelling kind of sour on me. I’m not sure if that’s the best way to describe it, but basically it just smelled strange on me but smelled nice in the tin. That was disappointing, but it’s not really the product’s fault. Fragrance is all about chemistry, and since everyone’s body is just a little bit different, it can be hard to predict how one person will react to a fragrance. I do think that it’s worth a try for others, and I hope to find someone I can give my tin to who can appreciate the fragrance.

I definitely want to try a different Zoella product since this one didn’t work out. Do any of you have any suggestions for some of her products that you have loved? Maybe a bath-themed one?
