Blogmas Day 12: The Christmas Caper

Welcome to Day 12 of Blogmas! We have a bit of a mystery today. I opened today’s advent calendar panel and discovered that it was…empty!

That’s right! Day 12 was just an empty hole where it appears a full sized eyeshadow could have fit. I feel a bit cheated, but it is also kind of funny as I imagine a makeup-loving grinch absconding with my little gift. Oh well! I do think that this advent calendar is a great idea, but it has been a bit underwhelming. Maybe next year I’ll get the one from L’Occitane.

Blogmas Day 11: Lip Liner to Go

Welcome to Day 11 of Blogmas! I can’t believe that Christmas is only two weeks away! Today’s advent calendar panel finally revealed something that  US Sephora users can buy too: the Sephora Lip Liner to Go. These tiny, portable lip liners can be purchased for $6.

I’ll admit that I don’t typically use or like lip liners, but I’m glad that I have this one now. I think that red is the one color that often requires lip liner because it bleeds more than other colors in my experience. So, I’m glad this one is red! Also, it works really well. It’s easy to apply and lasts a very long time. I would prefer if it was just a bit creamier, but this is still a pretty good one at a very convenient size!

Almay Smart Shade Makeup

Sometimes I get sucked in and buy drugstore products in the hope that they’ll be just as good as higher end options. I’ve found some gems and had many more disappointments. Recently, I decided to try the Almay Smart Shade Skintone Matching Makeup which can be purchased from Target for about $10.

I’ve got to admit that this one ended up being a HUGE disappointment for me. It blended well into my skin – too well, in fact. I couldn’t see any difference wearing this product versus wearing no makeup at all. I guess it’s claims are really true then because it matched to my skintone perfectly, but it also didn’t cover ANY of my flaws. My skintone still looked a bit uneven and my acne was not even a little bit covered. I think this foundation would really only work for those blessed few who already have perfect skin and are only after the SPF factor.

What are some foundations that disappointed you? Are there any I should definitely avoid? Please, let me know in the comments section!

The Top 10 Products I’m Thankful For

Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and this time of the year is a time for us to be thankful for all the things and people that we’re blessed to have in our lives. Of course, I’m so incredibly grateful for my friends, family, Josh, a job that I love, and so much more! I’m also so very thankful for my readers (that’s you!) because you make blogging so much fun as we share our favorite products and navigate the worlds of beauty and fashion together. So, I thought I’d share with you the top 10 products that I’m thankful for:

Product #1: Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Day Tint

This tinted moisturizer is the best tinted moisturizer I’ve ever used. It blurs and conceals my imperfections and makes my skin look so much better after each use. This is the perfect blend of makeup and skincare.

Product #2: Dior Addict Lipsticks

This is the one lipstick range that I return to over and over again. I’ve purchased so many of them because they’re just the best – longwearing without being at all drying. The colors are so pretty and the buttery formula is divine.

Product #3: Tangle Teezer Brush

After I shower, my long hair is always tangled, and this is the best brush in the world to easily (and painlessly!) remove all the tangles.

Product #4: Make Up Forever Ultra HD Foundation

This medium-coverage foundation blends so well and covers all my imperfections. It lasts all day long and is my go-to foundation whenever I need that extra boost of skin confidence.

Product #5: Boscia Luminizing Black Mask

My acne responds so well to this product. Every time I use this product, my zits look noticeably reduced the next morning.

Product #6: Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm

Removing waterproof eye makeup has never been easier than with this product. It’s so gentle but effective and never leaves a weird residue.

Product #7: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

The harshest of winters is no match to this lip mask. This thick mask can be used overnight or at any time of day for an instant dose of moisture. Chapped lips won’t stand a chance.

Product #8: BareMinerals Stroke of Light Eye Brightener

This concealer is my favorite for covering my dark under eye circles. It makes me look more awake and never settles into fine lines or looks caked on or unnatural.

Product #9: Hourglass Strobe Lighting Powder

This subtle but beautiful glow is amazing! This product highlights like a dream and is perfect for contouring.

Product #10: Bumble and Bumble Grooming Creme

Whenever my hair looks dry, frizzy, or is just rebelling, I know this creme will tame it in an instant and make it look smooth and shiny without looking at all greasy.

Too Faced Sweet Peach Oil Gloss

Glosses that are oil-based are some of my favorites because oil makes glosses a lot less sticky! Recently, I received a sample of the Too Faced Sweet Peach Oil Gloss which can be purchased in full size from Sephora for $13.

This is definitely a great lipgloss, especially if you’re looking for a moisturizing neutral. All of the colors in this range are pretty neutral because the shades are so sheer. So, if you’re looking for a deep colored gloss, this isn’t the range for you. However, this is a great neutral range.

One great thing about this product is that, like most oil-based glosses, this one is not sticky! I don’t know about you, but I hate when lip gloss is sticky. It makes me distracted all day long when my lips are sticky, and I also feel like stickier consistencies make glosses look worse. Sticky glosses somehow make lips look flakier (even when they’re not particularly dry) because they don’t wear evenly. However, this gloss looks great and fades evenly because of it’s oiliness.

Also, like the rest of Too Faced’s Sweet Peach product series, this gloss smells like peach! Now, I can’t say that it smells entirely natural. It smells more like synthetic peach candy, but overall it’s still a really nice scent.

I definitely recommend this one!

What are some glosses you’ve been loving recently? Let me know in the comments section!

Glitter in the Age of Anxiety

stock photo, women, collar, hand, paper, finger, mouth, action, color, confetti, nails, woman, lip, sweater, kiss, blow, other, active

Some of you may have noticed that I wasn’t around last week. I had no new blog posts and I was mostly absent from social media. I’d like to say that I was fabulously busy with many glamorous things to do, but that would be a lie. The truth is that my anxiety was feeling debilitating and it took all my energy just to get up and go to work. By the time I got home, I attempted to do my homework (poorly) and then I just sat there waiting to fall asleep and try again the next day.

Anxiety comes in many forms. While I have generalized anxiety that can pop up at any time, I’m also a hypochondriac. People joke a lot about hypochondriacs, and I know it seems so irrational to people who don’t suffer from it, but it’s actually pretty overwhelming. I’m hypersensitive to bodily sensations, so a small pain in my side or abdomen or leg (something so insignificant that a “normal” person would be able to just ignore it completely) feels like a catastrophe waiting to happen. I fixate on it until my muscles clench and then the pain is exacerbated. Over the past three weeks, I’ve been absolutely convinced I had a hernia, ovarian cancer, a blood clot, an ulcer, and carpal tunnel. Right now, I’m pain free and not worrying about a specific health concern, but there is still this looming feeling of dread because I know how my mind is so conditioned to overreact and it’s only a matter of time (maybe even just minutes) before I start panicking again.

On the outside, I’ve been as glittery as ever (I even had the opportunity to dress up as a unicorn for a special children’s Halloween event at the library this week!) While there are many perceptive people in my life who could tell that I’m experiencing anxiety, most people I encounter don’t realize that anything is wrong. I think that makeup is a fantastic form of self-expression, but this week, it’s just been my mask. I’ve been trying to project a put-together image to distract from what’s going on inside. It’s fooled a lot of people, but I haven’t tricked my mind into feeling okay just yet.

I know I don’t normally get very personal on this blog, but I felt compelled to be honest about this because I don’t know who is reading this and what you’re going through. Anxiety is a very common thing, but it feels incredibly isolating to those who are going through it. It makes you feel like you’re too abnormal to relate to other people. It keeps you from trying fantastic things. It feels completely insurmountable most of the time, especially when you don’t have a support system. So, I just wanted to say to anyone who is going through something similar that you are not alone. I’m anxious too, and I’m wishing you all the best. You are not damaged beyond repair, and neither am I. Feel free to reach out to me if you’re feeling alone and need someone to talk to. My contact information is right here.

Since it’s taking much longer for me to accomplish everyday tasks, and I still have to work and do schoolwork, I probably won’t be able to continue blogging 5 times a week for a while. So, for now, I’m going to try to blog on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

Clinique Pep-Start Hydroblur Moisturizer

It’s going to be winter soon! This means that moisturizer is going to become extra important in any skincare routine (although, it really should be important year-round). I recently tried a different moisturizer: the Clinique Pep-Start Hydroblur Moisturizer which can be purchased from Sephora for $30.

One great thing about the Clinique brand is that they have great, quality products for more affordable prices than other Sephora-based brands. I find that this moisturizer is no exception. It does a great job at moisturizing and would work well as a primer. The “blur” effect is noticeable and allows makeup to sit really well on the skin. It fills in all the nooks and crannies that pop up on a face to create a smooth canvas.

I do think that this is a lighter moisturizer. Some people with dry skin might find that it doesn’t quite pack enough of a punch for them. My skin is pretty normal/combination and does not get extremely dry, so I find that it works well for me. I would think that it would be a good moisturizer for oily skin as well because the “blur” properties also make it look a bit mattified even though it’s moisturizing.

Have you tried this one? What’s your current go-to moisturizer? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Maybelline Fit Me! Foundation

A while ago, I mentioned that I was trying a bunch of drugstore foundations to review. It’s been an interesting experience because I’m just so used to ridiculously expensive foundations from Sephora, but I’ve found a few gems. One such gem is the Maybelline Fit Me! Matte + Poreless Foundation, which can be purchased from Target and similar stores for only $6.

Now, this foundation is not without its flaws, but I’m just stunned that something can perform so well and cost only $6! I was very impressed by the range of shades in this foundation line. They also have two different formulations. I purchased the Matte + Poreless one because I hate looking oily, but they also have a Dewy + Smooth formula if you’re someone who has drier skin or you just prefer a dewy finish.

There are two drawbacks to this foundation. First, it doesn’t last all day. I do find that about halfway through the work day, I feel like the foundation has pretty much completely faded away. Also, I find that I have to apply quite a bit of this foundation in order to get my desired look. But, still, it is only $6 so I don’t mind having to put on a few extra coats.

Overall, I do like this foundation. It blends very easily with the assistance of my damp beauty blender. It creates a medium-coverage, natural-looking finish. Also, it covers my acne pretty well, so I don’t need to use as much concealer afterwards. If you’re on a budget and you need a great foundation, I think this one is a pretty safe bet!

Have you tried this foundation? What did you think? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench Lip Rescue

I love lip products! There’s just something about putting color on the lips that makes a makeup look feel put together. Recently, I obtained the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Quench Lip Rescue in the shade Nude. This product can be purchased from Sephora for $19.

This one is quickly becoming one of my favorite lip products. It glides on so easily and covers the lips with a  sheer wash of color. It definitely helps lips to feel more moisturized and nourished. Long after the color has faded, the lips feel softer and healthier. The color doesn’t last a terribly long time, but that’s the trade off of having a nourishing formula. I definitely don’t mind reapplying this one throughout the day because it also has this amazing minty smell that I love.

Overall, I highly recommend this one to anyone looking for a moisturizing lipstick with just a touch of color. I would love to purchase more shades of this one, especially the shades Rose and Cherry. Tarte is also one of the more natural brands at Sephora, so I always love when I find one of their products that I love because I know it isn’t filled with tons of chemicals.

Have any of you tried this one or any other Tarte lipsticks? Please, let me know your thoughts in the comment section!

Skincare

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield

Primers are essential to makeup application. They smooth out the canvas and allow the makeup to sit on top of something other than bare skin. Primers fill in little imperfections that would otherwise be magnified by makeup so that your finish can be flawless. Now, not everyone uses a traditional primer but many people use moisturizers or other products that still act like primers. I decided to try a skincare product that could double as a primer, so I chose the Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield which can be purchased from Sephora for $65 per 1 oz container.

This product claims to do a whole lot for skin. First, it contains 30 SPF to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays. No matter what season it is, SPF is an important ingredient for skin. Just because you’re not getting a sunburn in winter doesn’t mean that the sun’s rays aren’t affecting your skin condition.

It also is supposed to create a blurred effect on the skin by blurring imperfections. This works by smoothing the skin and filling in all the pores and crevices. I will say that this does a good job at creating that canvas. My makeup does look better when I use this under the makeup rather than applying makeup to a bare face. It has a great, velvety texture which may feel heavy to some, but I happen to really like it.

Finally, the formula is supposed to help the overall texture of the skin and prevent aging. Now, I think that these claims are maybe a bit much. I haven’t noticed any change to the actual texture of my skin. Once I wash my face, my skin doesn’t look smoother or less dull. I would say the overall skincare benefits of this product feel a bit exaggerated.

This works really well as a primer, but I don’t think I can justify the $65 price tag. There are lots of other primers that are half the price that do the same thing. I’m glad I splurged on this once just to try it out, but I won’t be repurchasing when I can get the same look for less by using the Make Up Forever Smoothing Primer.

What primer do you usually use? Is there one that you can’t live without? Please, let me know in the comment section!
