St. Tropez One Night Only Gloss

I have given up on getting a tan. Over the years, I’ve realized that I must be at least a quarter vampire because really nothing can make me look less cadaverous. I literally repel the sun (I don’t even burn!) Still, sometimes I find myself desiring to look a bit less ghostly, so I was excited when I received a sample of the St. Tropez One Night Only Gloss. This product can be purchased from Sephora and similar retailers for $25.

I have tried self-tanner before. It’s so hard to get even, it always fades in strange ways, and it has a propensity to turn me either orange or yellow. This product, however, isn’t actually self-tanner. It’s a bronze gloss that washes off and doesn’t stain your skin or clothes. Unfortunately, this one was still not a winner for me.

I was glad that I did not look orange with this product, but I also didn’t look bronzed either. It took a huge amount of product to make a difference, and after using a bunch, at best I looked really shiny with a bit of bronze glitter mixed in. The product did smell like plastic though, so I didn’t like how I smelled after I used so much of it.

I will admit that it did not transfer, but that could be because there was very little tint to transfer. Keep in mind, I’m extremely pale, so I imagine that most people could use a ton of this product and not see any difference at all.

I think that this gloss might do a good job at enhancing an existing tan, but it’s not going to do anything to create the illusion of one.

Dior Backstage Cool Eyeshadow Palette

Eyeshadow palettes are a big seller for cosmetics companies, but I hate when I buy a palette only to discover that I can’t used a significant portion of the colors. Whenever I’m considering buying an eyeshadow palette, I really look at it and make sure that the majority of colors are ones that I could wear pretty frequently. I was so excited when Dior launched their Backstage Makeup Collection, and I was browsing Sephora’s website. I discovered that this collection included a cool-toned shadow palette filled with light pinks, mauves, purples, and taupes. The moment I saw it, I knew that I could rock every single color, so I jumped at the chance to purchase the Dior Backstage Eyeshadow Palette in Cool. This palette is sold for $49 at Sephora and similar retailers.

First, let’s discuss the price. Yes, it’s a really hefty price, especially when you only get 8 shadows and 1 square of primer. Upon reflection, this palette is not worth the price, but I do still really like it for those who have the urge to splurge!

The shadows are gorgeous, and there is a nice variety of both matte and shimmer shades. When choosing eyeshadows in the morning, I have been finding myself grabbing this palette over and over again because these shades are all cool-toned but also neutral. Not only can I use every shade in this palette, but I can also use them daily for a variety of subtle looks. The shades are all pretty buildable, but even when using the darker shades, the looks aren’t going to get more dramatic than maybe a daytime smokey eye. Overall, this palette is a great daily palette with a fun spin on neutral shadows that really enhance the green in my eyes.

I was surprised by the sheer quality of the shades, but as I mentioned, you can build them up until they’re as bold as you want. The texture is pretty consistent for each shadow, and they apply quite smoothly and evenly. I was pleased that none of the shadows seemed chalky or patchy. Rather, there was almost a satiny finish to the shadows.

Now, let’s talk about the built-in primer square. It was not good. I found that using this primer before the shadow did not result in long-wear and there was still quite a bit of creasing by the end of the day. When I used my Urban Decay or Too Faced shadow primers instead, I was much more pleased with the overall look – there was no creasing and the shadows were far more vibrant and long-lasting.

To be honest, I do love this palette even though the price tag was exorbitant. I’ve been looking for another daily palette with purples (since my other daily palette – UD Naked 3 – has more pinks/beiges) and I’ve been pleased with the look of these shades!

Would you consider buying this one? Do you know of any dupes for this palette? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Pretty Vulgar – Bury Them With a Smile Lipstick

I’m such a sucker for pretty packaging! Recently, as I browsing Sephora’s website, I came across the Bury Them With a Smile Lipstick from Pretty Vulgar and was just enamored with the fun name and adorable design on the lipstick tube. I couldn’t help myself – I just had to buy it. But I’m so glad I did! This product can be purchased from Sephora and similar retailers for $24.

Not only is this a fun lipstick to look at and carry around in your handbag, it actually performs really well too. I purchased the shade, “Darling, Be Daring,” which is a great cool-toned fuchsia. It applies pretty opaquely and very evenly in just one or two swipes. The finish is matte, and I’ve been so impressed by how this holds up throughout the day.

This is a long-wear lipstick, and it wears very well. There is minimal transfer when eating and drinking. After a big meal, you can tell that it’s faded a bit (and not completely evenly if you look closely at the inner portion of the lips), but it still looks pretty good after eating. Still, I tend to reapply after a meal, although I think I could get away with not reapplying and it would still be passable.

The product description of this lipstick claims to keep your lips moisturized with hydrating butters and oils, and I do disagree with this claim. While I’ve been pleased that it doesn’t seem to dry my lips out too much and never settles into any lines, it is certainly not moisturizing. My lips are definitely a bit dryer at the end of the day (as is normal for any long-wear lipstick) and I require a thicker balm in the evening to remedy this for the next day.

Overall, I’ve been really pleased with this lipstick. The shade is so pretty, and it’s been so easy to maintain throughout the day. I highly recommend this one!

Have you tried anything from Pretty Vulgar? If so, please let me know in the comment section. I don’t know much about the brand, and I’d love to try another of their products.

Lâncome Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara

I finally found it! After going so long feeling ambivalent towards most mascaras, I’ve finally found one that takes my lashes from lackluster to luxurious: the Lâncome Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara. This product is available from Sephora and similar retailers for $25.

I love the tight brush with sturdy bristles in this mascara wand. They seem to comb through my lashes so well to create a dramatic (and not spidery) look. I don’t know how this formula does it, but my lashes are finally keeping a curl and staying nice all day. Typically, I would avoid using a waterproof formula daily since that can lead to damage of the lashes, but I just can’t get over this one. I think I’m going to have to try the non-waterproof formula to compare the two. Still, even with the waterproof aspect, it’s been easy to remove with my normal eye makeup remover. This truly is the best of both worlds: it lasts all day but is easy to remove. Plus, my lashes are looking fantastic.

Have you tried this mascara or the non-waterproof version? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Lotus Youth Preserve Rescue Mask

I’m such a sucker for a face mask. They feel luxurious, but they also pack a powerful punch of skincare benefits in one concentrated treatment. Recently, I tried the Fresh Lotus Youth Preserve Rescue Mask. This product retails at Sephora for $62 (with a mini version available for $25).

I loved this mask! According to its product description, it’s supposed to help with: dullness, rough texture, uneven tone, dryness, and congestion. I can honestly say that it does what it claims. Using this mask a few times a week has definitely improved the overall state of my skin. My acne was reduced and my skin looked smoother for sure! It’s definitely worth the price. It’s also packed with some great skincare ingredients like seaweed, red algae, and lotus flower. I can’t believe that a mask so gentle on the skin can give such great results too. I highly recommend this one!

Have you tried this one or do you have a face mask that’s great for acne? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Anastasia Lip Gloss

I adore lip gloss, but I’m very picky sometimes. I have a cool-toned complexion, so I limit my color choices. Plus, I hate sticky things. But a good lip gloss is a great confidence booster. Recently, despite my aversion to corals, I tried the Anastasia Lip Gloss in St. Tropez. This gloss retails at Sephora for $16.

I was pleased that I could pull this off, even though it has some warm coral undertones. It’s still pink enough to be kind of neutral though, so that works in my favor. It’s a truly stunning color with a high-shine finish that is a bit metallic.

The consistency of this gloss is delightful. It’s thick enough that you really only need one coat for a beautiful, opaque look. Best of all – it’s not sticky at all. It feels almost like a mousse on the lips, which never completely dries down. The good thing about that is you get all the color of a lipstick without any dryness.

Have you tried this gloss? What did you think? Be sure to let me know in the comment section!

Too Faced Melted Latex Lipstick Fail!

I love dramatic lipsticks, but they don’t all love me back! Recently, I was shopping online at Sephora and I saw that they had a sale on the Too Faced Melted Latex lipsticks. They were only $10, and I’ve had great luck with these before. I wanted to go for something really bold, so I went for the deep red shade “Bite Me.”

I was so looking forward to this one. I envisioned myself turning heads with my dramatic red/wine lips like a vintage movie starlet. Alas, that was not meant to be. When the lipstick arrived, I instantly knew something was wrong. I did receive the right shade, but instead of a reddish wine, it looked like a dark brown. Still, I paid $10 so I was going to give it a go.

I looked like a cartoon villain dressed up for Halloween. Not only was the color all wrong, but the opacity was terrible. It was a very uneven product and it took a lot of effort to make the color look evenly distributed. I wore it while shopping that night and I felt a lot of stares but not the kind I had hoped for.

The next day, I brought it to work. When things got slow, I went to the bathroom to try it on again, but my trusty coworkers assured me that it needed to be removed ASAP.

I did learn a few things from this experience though:

  1. Whenever possible, test a lipstick shade in person instead of just guessing based on the picture posted on the website.
  2. Sometimes things are on sale for a reason.
  3. Always have a backup lipstick in your purse when testing something so risky.

Not all makeup risks pan out, but it’s still fun to try sometimes. Still, this is a shade that’s getting tossed for sure!

Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks

I’m obsessed with the skin underneath my eyes. I want to avoid crow’s feet as long as possible, so I’m very diligent about eye cream, sunscreen (also, avoiding the sun), plus not tugging at the skin when removing eye makeup. I’m always excited when I’m sent new eye products, and recently I had the chance to try the Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks. You can get 6 pairs of these single-use masks for $25 at Sephora and similar retailers.

My first impression of this product is that the size is ridiculous. The pads are way too big for the undereye area, so I had to maneuver them really carefully to get them on the skin underneath my eyes without them getting too close to my actual eye. This was extra difficult since they were so big and bulky.

I was, however, pleased that they really stayed in place. You’re supposed to keep them on for about 10-15 minutes. I left them on for about 20-25, and they never fell off as I did some work around the apartment. Other eye masks I’ve tried were so slimy and weird that I had to recline with my head back the entire time to keep them from falling off, so this was a welcome change.

In terms of results, I was a bit underwhelmed. My undereye area seemed a bit more moisturized afterwards, but that was about it. It contains lavender and aloe to soothe the undereye, but I felt like a lot of eye creams I use depuff better than this. There’s also hyaluronic acid for moisture and anti-aging effects, but that’s something you’d need to track over time, and I’m not sure this would be the best everyday product when there are plenty of great eye creams with hyaluronic acid that would be more affordable for daily use.

Overall, I definitely won’t be purchasing these, but I do think they could be a fun addition for a girls’-night-in spa party since the gold foil looks pretty fancy!

Ciaté Wonderwand Mascara

I’ve been looking for a better mascara for a while now. For some reason, nothing I do seems to make a difference with my lashes. They just won’t keep a curl and always look so dull. Recently, I tried a new mascara: the Ciaté Wonderwand Mascara. This mascara is $22 at Sephora and similar retailers.

My first impressions of this mascara have been positive, but I’m not at all blown away. My eyelashes still don’t look the way I want them to, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. I love the small, stiff bristles which seem to comb through the lashes and coat them evenly. This mascara is supposed to add a lot of volume, and I think it does an okay job at this, but the main feature I see is how it separates the lashes well and seems to add some length.

I do like the mascara, and I’ll use this deluxe sample up, but I don’t think I’ll purchase the full-size version.

Do you have a mascara that holds curl well without weighing down thin lashes? If so, please let me know in the comment section so I can try it out!

Clinique Pep Start Pout Perfecting Balm

My guilty pleasure is definitely buying lip products. I think I already have more than one person can even use up during one lifetime, yet I continue to buy more. Recently, I’ve been wanting a more tinted balm look with a generous pop of color, and I found a really great one: the Clinique Pep Start Pout Perfecting Balm. These are $17.50 a piece at Sephora and similar retailers. I got this adorable tin with three mini versions for just $18. It contains 3 of the 4 shades they make: clear, guava, and cherry. The one I don’t have is tangerine, but that’s definitely for the best since I could never ever pull off tangerine.

I am in love with these balms! They are so moisturizing, and they do not require much reapplication throughout the day. With a tinted balm, you can usually expect a little bit of color that fades quickly, but that’s not really the case here. The pigment packs quite the punch, and a subtle tint does remain even as the balm fades away. I was super impressed with this product. They seem to have a slight plumping effect on the lips, and they perform really well. If you’re looking for a great tinted balm, I highly recommend this one!
